Messy Makes The Magic

When I first started out as a photographer, I thought everything had to be perfect. Perfect light. Perfect focus. Perfect hair that didn’t dare move in the wind. I was a pixel peeper - an annoying individual who scrutinizes images to evaluate for quality.

And while there’s absolutely a time and place for polished images, what I slowly realized as a San Diego family photographer is this: perfection was stealing the magic. I was missing the real stuff.

The reason people actually book family sessions, couples sessions, and engagement photos in the first place isn’t to look perfect. It’s to remember how it felt. 

So I started leaning into the chaos, because that's what life tends to feel like a lot of the time. Let the wind whip through your hair during a beach session in San Diego. Let the toddler running full speed into your arms go slightly out of focus. Or the dog that refuses to sit still during an engagement session and instead photobombs every frame. Or sibling who is technically holding the baby but mostly just enthusiastically squishing them (some of my favs).

That’s the magic of candid family photography.

That’s lifestyle photography.

That’s what real San Diego couples and family sessions look like.

Life isn’t a lineup of Stepford moms and perfectly behaved children who never spill, trip, or make weird faces, because they literally don't exist! It’s loud and wiggly and beautifully unpredictable. It’s the ordinary Tuesday that, years later, you realize was everything (sidenote: Tuesdays are the best days to shoot in San Diego:).
