What to Wear for Your Family Photography Session
A San Diego Family Photographer’s Honest Advice.
Let’s talk about the most stressful part of family photos.
Not wrangling the kids or the dog(s).
Not convincing your partner that family photos are actually a good idea and they won't be as painful as they are imagining.
Not even getting everyone out the door on time, although I feel this one deeply.
It's figuring out what everyone should wear.
Every single client asks me the same question before their session and honestly I get it. Picking outfits for multiple humans who all have opinions is not exactly relaxing.
So here is the rule I give all of my families: Think about looking at these photos twenty years from now.
Now ask yourself a very important question.
Do you want to remember your kid wearing a neon Minecraft shirt and your partner in a graphic tee that says something like Grill Master or the classic bikini t-shirt? (Pleeease, no!).
Exactly.
Trends are fun in the moment but photos are forever. The goal is for your photos to feel timeless, not like a fashion time capsule from 2026.
Here is how to make that happen.
Choose Timeless Clothing Over Trends
The safest rule when choosing outfits for family photos is simple.
Classic wins.
Clean colors. Simple silhouettes. Nothing that screams for attention.
Your photos should be about your family and the connection between you. Not someone’s shirt that demands to be the main character.
If the clothing is the first thing you notice in a photo, it is probably too loud.
Skip Graphic Tees, Logos, and Loud Patterns
I know this might break a few hearts but graphic tees do not photograph well.
Neither do big logos.
Neither do giant cartoon characters.
These things instantly date photos and pull attention away from faces and emotion, which is actually the good stuff.
Small patterns and subtle textures can be beautiful, but loud patterns and bold prints tend to take over the image.
When in doubt, simpler is always better.
Coordinate Colors Instead of Matching
This is not 1993.
We are not doing the white shirts and jeans situation.
Instead of matching outfits, think about coordinating colors.
A great approach is choosing two or three colors and building everyone's outfits around that palette.
Some combinations that photograph beautifully in San Diego light include:
- Cream, tan, and denim
- Sage, ivory, and soft blues
- Warm neutrals like sand, rust, and beige
- Soft earth tones with one gentle pop of color
Everything feels cohesive but nobody looks like they were issued a uniform.
Start With One Outfit and Build From There
Here is my favorite trick.
Pick one outfit you love first.
Usually this is mom's dress or a child's outfit. Once you have that anchor piece, pull colors from it to build the rest of the family.
This makes coordinating outfits dramatically easier and prevents the classic night before meltdown of nothing goes together.
Pro tip. Moms, pick something you feel amazing in first. The rest can follow.
Texture and Movement Photograph Beautifully
Clothes that move create magic in photos.
Flowy dresses, linen shirts, cozy sweaters, soft fabrics, layers like cardigans or light jackets. These add depth and movement to images.
San Diego beach sessions especially benefit from this. Fabric catching the wind adds life to photos in a way stiff clothing never will.
Think relaxed and natural.
Comfort Always Beats Perfection
If your child hates their outfit, everyone will know.
Choose clothing people can move in, run in, sit in, and climb rocks in. The best photos rarely happen when everyone is standing perfectly still and smiling at the camera.
They happen when families are walking along the beach, kids are climbing onto their parents, hair is blowing everywhere, and everyone forgets the camera is even there.
That is where the magic lives.
